The Whittler
At the end of a tour on Saturday night not too long ago, two guys in their early twenties, approached me an told me that a small girl about 6 years old on the tour had brought to their attention a male figure leaning against a light pole near the Jail. I had been getting this report the past 3 nights and figured it was time to check it out. I told the two guys to follow me and let's see what this is. As we walked up the street, the two guys being able to still see the figure asked if I could see it yet. I said "No. What does he look like?" "He has a red shirt and beard and is wearing a floppy hat.", was the reply. At that moment I was able to see the figure leaning against the pole way up by the Jail. I told them to follow me and don't talk. As we walked up the street the figure became clearer and clearer. We could see that he was whittling something in his hands. We finally passed in front of the Calico Photo Shop and stayed on the right side of the wagon in the middle of the street to hide ourselves. As we passed the far end of the wagon, still about 50 yards away, he disappeared right in front of our eyes. We walked up to where he was leaning against the light pole and looked around to see if there was anything to give us the illusion of this figure. There was nothing, including no red anywhere, the color of his shirt. I am convinced the Whittler was there.
